The more millennials see that the things such as a mortgage, car loans, and student loans aren’t as important as our parents made them to be, we realize that our friendships are even more important. Naturally you grow from a child where you only care if your parent approves of your actions, to caring about the reactions of the people around you. This is what happens in middle school where children begin to notice each other’s flaws and advantages. They then seek the approval of the people around them based off that. As age grows, we care less about what everyone thinks and our lens of seeking approval shrinks to that of a few people. Those people are our friends. You can’t choose your family, but you make a conscious decision to choose your friends. The term friend even has a subjective meaning that might be based off different requirements. But friends, nonetheless, become our main source of approval and understanding.
